Item Checklist:

  • Driver's License
  • Insurance verification cards
  • Workers Compensation Authorization or Auto Insurance Letter (if applicable)
  • Doctor's Order
  • X-rays, Cat Scans, etc. of the area that you are having scanned

After arriving at the Thumb MRI Center you will be asked to complete several pages of paperwork. You may download and complete these before your arrival by clicking here for the Patient Forms. We will copy your insurance cards and collect any outside films you may have brought with you. We will also ask for your doctor's order. After you are done with your paperwork a technologist will take you to a private waiting room where he/she will go over the paperwork with you. Then the technologist will explain the procedure to you. Feel free at any time to ask any questions that you may have.

You will be asked to remove anything metallic (jewelry, eyeglasses, watches etc.) We advise that any of these items that you don't need be locked in your car or left at home, however we do offer a secure locker for your valuables also. .

A typical exam lasts from 30-45 minutes. You will also be offered earplugs or earphones to listen to music during the scan. You can choose from a variety of music, which we have here, or you may bring your own CD. To begin the exam, you will lie down on the padded scan table. When the machine starts to work, you'll hear some gentle tapping sounds. These sounds occur whenever the MRI pictures are being taken. Think of them as the clicks a VERY large camera would make when taking pictures!

An MRI is completely painless. The only thing that you must do is HOLD STILL. If you move the scans will be out of focus-and you may have to repeat the exam. If ordered by your Doctor, you may be injected with a solution called a "contrast agent." MRI contrast agents typically have few or no side effects but you may be required to obtain bloodwork prior to your appointment if contrast is prescribed.

When your scan is finished, the technologist will assist you off of the table and direct you back to the dressing room or the front lobby. You will receive a CD with your MRI images to take to your doctor. These copies take about 10 minutes to create. The technologist will bring them to you when they are ready.

Your doctor will receive a written report via fax within 48 hours of your exam. Your exam is now finished. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to express them to the receptionist or the technologist. We want to do everything possible to make your experience at the Thumb MRI Center a comfortable and pleasant one.

After your exam is complete, we ask that you take a few moments to complete our patient satisfaction survey.
